The internet giant, google is celebrating its 18th birthday on 27th September 2016 with an animated Doodle shown over the search page. In 1998, the company was founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin on September 27. Now the company has passed its successful 17th year and entering to 18th year. Since 2002, Google is celebrating its birthday with a Doodle every year. The first Doodle was published for the Burning Man festival in 1998, before the company was technically founded.

It shows Google’s “G” blowing up a balloon to spell out the rest of its name. But blowing it up too much, and being carried off into the sky. But there is a confusion about the official birthday date. In 2004, Google celebrated its 6th birthday Doodle on september 7 and in the year before that, it was september 8.

4G service likely by September

4G services in Nepal

Nepali telecom operators might be able to introduce 4G service by September.

Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) - the telecommunications sector regulator -- has made amendment to the existing Radio Frequency Policy, allowing telecom operators to launch 4G service. The draft of the policy, which is now at the Ministry of Information and Communications (MoIC), will be passed within next 10 days, according to MoIC Secretary Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya.

If the amendment is passed within 10 days, telecom operators will be able to launch 4G service within September.

Nepali telecom operators have been saying that they will be able to roll out 4G services within two months of receiving permit from the government.

“We are desperate to introduce 4G service in Nepal and enhance users' Internet using experience. I believe that we will be able to begin this service within two months after getting government's permission,” Simon Perkins, managing director of Ncell, told Republica.

It has been many months since the telecom operators Nepal Telecom and Ncell sought NTA's nod to launch 4G service. However, NTA was not in a position to issue permission without making amendment to the existing Radio Frequency Policy.

“We have made amendment to Radio Frequency Policy, allowing operators to roll out 4G service. The draft of the amended policy has been sent to MoIC for approval,” Purushottam Khanal, information officer of NTA, told Republica. “We are hopeful that the amendment will be passed soon by the ministry soon, allowing telecom operators to launch 4G service in Nepal.”

The revised policy has to be approved by the Radio Frequency Policy Committee under MoIC which is headed by Minister for Information and Communications Sherdhan Rai.

Officials say the fresh amendment to Radio Frequency Policy allows telecom operators to upgrade their service under 'technology neutrality' policy. This means that operators can launch 4G service with existing 1,800 MHz frequency which is being used to provide 3G service.

Officials of NT say it takes at least 3-4 months to begin 4G service after getting regulator's permission. “We can provide 4G service with our existing infrastructure for 3G. But we will need radio network equipment and core network equipment,” Dilli Adhikari, joint spokesperson of NT, said. “As the procurement process is lengthy, it will take at least 3-4 months.”

Adhikari, however, added that the process can be simplified by adopting 'fast track' provision envisioned in the recently amended Public Procurement Act (PPA).

4G Services in Nepal

4G Internet Services in Nepal

Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has started preparations to start 4G service in Nepal. 4G services has been already launched officially in India and Nepal aslo moving towards the path of 4G technology.

Simply 4G is an acronym for fourth generation of mobile communication technologies. Now in Nepal, 2G to 3G services are active in both GSM and CDMA mobiles but with the evolvement of 4G, user will experience the latest technology handy.

Government is working out for the implementation of 4G services which would be soon brought into operation", said Sherdhan Rai, Minister for Information and Communications. "The existing 3G service would be expanded countrywide whereas the 4G service would be operated in major cities including in the Kathmandu", he added.

As per experts the time is right for the adoption of the LTE  in Nepal with the spectrum 700-900MHz range.  Nepal can go 4G adoption, as this range of frequency is best for affordable smart phones and tablets. Nepal has adopted APT Band plan as of May 2013 but still not in a well version policy to adopt 700MHz range. But a good question whether to go with LTE 1800M or APT700 can be a good public/stakeholder’s discussion should NTA think the public/expert’s opinion matter.

ICT Guff with Bishnu Rimal

ICT Guff with Bishnu Rimal

A young Entrepreneur and writer at Techguff.com, Anish Upreti has ICT Guff with Bishnu Rimal, Manager of Hotel Mount View Pokhara. Bishnu Rimal is the Tourism personality in Nepal who is trying to develop Information Technology and Tourism (ITT) culutre in Nepal.

Here is the some questions related to the Tourism and IT made by Anish to Bishnu Rimal.

1. Tell us about your background and your kick-start to Tourism industry.
My name Bishnu Rimal and I’m from Pokhara. Currently, I’m involved in tourism industry. I’m trying to change the traditional way of Tourism in Nepal. I started my career as a trekking guide on 2004 A.D. After completing my college level, I went to Ghandruk/Ghorepani with 3 American guys as a trek guide. At that moment I got a chance to explore more about Tourism industry in Nepal. After a long research I stepped into tourism industry.

2. What is the role of information and technology in tourism?
Information and technology is the lifeblood of tourism, ITs provide both opportunities and challenges for the industry. Technology plays an important role in the hospitality and tourism industry. Both customers and businesses can benefit from advances in communication, reservations and guest services systems. Technology allows continuous communication and streamlines the guest experience, from reservation to checkout.

3. Tell us about the use of information and technology in the field of tourism in Nepal?
Well, the use of information and technology in the field of tourism in Nepal is somehow improving. Nepal started to providing information about tourism of Nepal since 2002 A.D and it was not effective upto 2006 A.D. Now the people who are involved in tourism are giving priority to information and technology. We can see that; most of the hotels, trekking agency, spa have website and according to the research; about 55% booking are done online. Now, they have realized that ICT is one of the important factor for the development of their tourism industry. Nowadays, E-marketing is also being parctised in tourism field. Even government is running E-village programs in rural areas of Nepal to promote tourism.

4. So what is the present condition of ICT in the context of tourism in Nepal?
In my view, the present condition of ICT in the context of tourism in Nepal is worst. For example, According to the research, 44% of tourist who visit Nepal complained about the communication system(slow speed, poor performance, high cost and inaduequate operational facility, lack of satellite phone etc ) in Nepal. They also complained that; information available on Internet about the Nepal is incomplete as well as confusing. Even government is not focusing to develop Information Technology & Tourism (ITT) culture in Nepal. As we know the internet is one of the fastest growing market. If we can promote tourism of Nepal through internet then, I’m pretty sure that there will be high traffic of tourist in Nepal.

5. Do your company have website?
Yes my company owns two website and they are  www.hotellakestar.com/ &  www.mountviewpokhara.com/ are the URL of my company.

6. Have you heard about web promotion? which is the best way to promote your hotel?
Yes, I have heard about SEO(Search Engine Optimization), SMO(Social Media Optimization), Google Ads, PPC(Pay Per Click) Campaign etc. As we are running Hotel business, we obviously need the customers traffic. One of the best way to increase customer traffic is facebook ads and booking engines like booking.com, agoda.com and tripadvisor.com.

7.Tell us how you are taking benefits from Internet?
Of course, I’m taking alot of benefits from Internet.  I’m taking alot of benefits from booking engines like booking.com, tripadvisor.com, agoda.com. I have also gained benefits using Facebook ads and Google Ads. They are cheaper than that of other paper ads.
